Social disruption: Sublethal pesticides in pollen lead to Apis mellifera queen events and brood loss

چکیده
Eusocial Apis mellifera colonies depend on queen longevity and brood viability to survive, as the is sole reproductive individual maturing replenishes shorter-lived worker bees. Production of many crops rely both pesticides bee pollination improve crop quantity quality, yet sublethal impacts this pesticide exposure often poorly understood. We investigated resiliency queens their after one month field relevant doses that mimic during commercial contracts. exposed full size pollen contaminated with field-relevant fungicides (chlorothalonil propicanizole), insecticides (chlorypyrifos fenpropathrin) or both, noting a significant reduction in consumption compared control. While we found no difference total amount collected per colony, higher proportion non-pollen foragers was detected all colonies. After ceasing treatments, measured development, discovering increase loss and/or cannibalism across groups. Sublethal general linked reduced production replacement workers change protein acquisition (pollen vs. foraging). Fungicide also resulted increased queen.

Pollen Foraging Response to Brood Pheromone by Africanized and European Honey Bees (Apis mellifera L.)
We examined the pollen foraging responses of Africanized and European honey bee colonies to hexane extractable compounds of Africanized and European larvae (brood pheromone). Brood pheromone was presented to broodless Africanized and European colonies equalized for numbers of bees, food stores and, empty comb space. The pheromone signiÞcantly increased the ratio of pollen to nonpollen foragers ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Pesticides on Queen Rearing and Virus Titers in Honey Bees (Apis mellifera L.)
The effects of sublethal pesticide exposure on queen emergence and virus titers were examined. Queen rearing colonies were fed pollen with chlorpyrifos (CPF) alone (pollen-1) and with CPF and the fungicide Pristine(®) (pollen-2). Fewer queens emerged when larvae from open foraging (i.e., outside) colonies were reared in colonies fed pollen-1 or 2 compared with when those larvae were reared in o...

Using a conditioned proboscis extension response (PER) assay, honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) can be trained to associate an odor stimulus with a sucrose reward. Previous studies have shown that observations of conditioned PER were of interest for assessing the behavioral effects of pesticides on the honeybee. In the present study, the effects of sublethal concentrations of nine pesticides on lea...

Terrestrial organisms need to limit evaporation from their bodies in order to maintain a homeostatic water balance. Owing to a large surface to volume ratio, arthropods are particularly susceptible to desiccation and have evolved behavioural and physiological mechanisms to conserve water. In social insects, water balance is also affected by the interactions between nestmates and by the architec...
